Museum tour with workshop
A discovery trail in the artist’s house and garden makes for an extra-special (first) encounter with art! A musical guided tour for curious children! The guide takes the young ‘experts’ around the museum and teaches them about Constant Permeke through his artworks. The children are encouraged to ask questions and thus to form their own opinions. Challenging tasks are the common thread running through this trail. And the cherry on the cake is a visual workshop in Studio Permeke’s cosy art studio!
In the workshop the pupils can choose between three and four different stations:
Charcoal palette, portrait?
We experiment with charcoal and go in search of Permeke’s expressive lines.
Panorama landscape
Permeke would often paint the landscape around his house. We make a frame with our hands and bring a piece of the landscape to life with acrylic paint and a real palette knife!
Clay
Familiarise yourself with professional modelling techniques!
Printing techniques
The children learn an etching technique with a printing press, create a monotype, and thus bring their drawing to life in a different way.

Interactive museum tour
Guided tour with creative tasks in the museum rooms (without a workshop). The children step into Constant Permeke’s world, and the museum, with a fresh, unbiased perspective. They get to know the artist in his own home through his artworks, including a number of surprising paintings, drawings and sculptures with some exciting stories to tell. During an active tour, your pupils will explore the fascinating visual language of expressionist art. Via a series of interactive tasks, the guide encourages the participants go in search of lines, shapes and emotions; they also learn to formulate the visual language themselves. This provides plenty of material for a follow-up classroom activity, such as an art project or a related creative spin-off!

Under the press
With this printmaking workshop, we explore the many themes that were central to Constant Permeke’s art. We graze amongst his subjects, looking at composition, light, colour, form, darkness, shadow, texture and details in his artworks in order to subsequently experiment in the workshop with our own printing technique. The pupils learn the technical skills relevant to graphics: they scratch, draw, polish, glue and print their artwork to life with Studio Permeke’s large etching press.
