Museum tour with workshop
An active guided tour of Constant Permeke’s home and studios brings young people into contact with the artist’s sources of inspiration, as well as the many subjects that were central to his work. Participants explore a broad collection of his expressionistic drawings, paintings and sculptures, learn about his unusual visual language, and explore his idiosyncratic mixed-media techniques. Using sketches made from a detail of an artwork or depicting a view of the expansive garden, they continue their work in the Studio Permeke workshop.
Participants can choose from a range of visual techniques, such as drawing with charcoal, painting with acrylic paint or printing with the etching press.

Under the press
With this printmaking workshop, we explore the many themes that were central to Constant Permeke’s art. We graze amongst his subjects, looking at composition, light, colour, form, darkness, shadow, texture and details in his artworks in order to subsequently experiment in the workshop with our own printing technique. The pupils learn the technical skills relevant to graphics: they scratch, draw, polish, glue and print their artwork to life with Studio Permeke’s large etching press.
Choose from:
- Monotypes
- Dry needle on milk carton or plexi plate
- Collagraphy or collage print

Interactive museum tour
Explore and investigate Constant Permeke’s life and work in more detail on this wonderful interactive museum tour (without creative workshop). Permeke’s studio-cum-home contains a wide range of his drawings, paintings and sculptures. Together with the guide, the young people immerse themselves in his sources of inspiration and in the many themes that fascinated the artist, they learn to read his visual language and to understand the additional value of his idiosyncratic mixed-media techniques. They think beyond the artwork and analyse the spirit of the era and the social context. How conditioned is our view of the world today and the way in which we view art? There is plenty of time for tasks, interaction and the formulation of individual opinions.
